The baby girl slept throughout the session! Actually, her mom planned in order to let her sleep and we talked about how the newborn session goes before the session day. Her mom adjusted the timing to feed as well! However, we would like her to be in the good mood during the newborn baby session. If your kids already have a certain clothing taste, let’s let them wear what they want 🙂 You can bring other clothes though, in case they they change their feelings![/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]I captured a few lovely sibling pictures. This is one of them. The girl found the best place to play with her dolls she brought for the session! It was already occupied when I finished wrapping the baby. [vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Near the end of last year in 2018, I got an honorable email from Basic Invite. Basic Invite is one of the big invitation and card companies in the US. The company asked me to be their featured photographer on their blog! They asked me to share a story of having my business Kimi Photography in the US. As one of many foreigners in the US, I really appreciate the opportunity to be their featured photographer to share my story![/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”3866″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]I asked one of my clients to use their pictures for the blog posting. They have been using Kimi Photography since the little girl was still in the belly! Getting to know them for their maternity pictures then they keep using us as their family photographer. How awesome is that!![/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]As you read in the blog, the joy and love of photography came first in my life. Kimi Photography also cares how we can remain and become the story teller to the next generations as a professional photographer.

In this generation, anyone can be a “photographer” if you hold camera or phone. There are many aspects to being a professional photographer however. I believe that knowing and applying photography skill to provide better services to capture and create the treasures for future generations is one of the responsibilities to call ourselves as a professional newborn and family photographer 🙂

Tips for a fun outside family photography session in Portland!

Taking care of chores fills up your schedule, and taking pictures with your phone of your kids helps distract from the feelings of missing those precious moments in your life…

Life goes so fast.

When you are raising your kids, you may hope that they grow up as fast as possible. However when you look back after they grow up, most people think they grew up too fast. If you decide to have a family photography session in Portland, please contact Kimi Photography. Let’s enjoy the moment of having a family photography session and make it a treasure of your family!

To make the family photography session successful, I have some tips to make things smooth. There are also some preparations that we usually ask our clients to take. I will write about those and I hope they give you some ideas of having your family session with us.[/vc_column_text]

-Posing First

[vc_column_text]Unless they are used to being in front of a camera, people don’t know what to do. I am not a person who loves to have my portrait taken, so I know how you feel if you don’t know what to do when someone holds a camera and aims at you!

I believe that posing sometimes helps to warm up the session in the beginning. You don’t have to freeze, and I lightly pose most of the time. You can move if you want to. However, it depends on the client. Some people can naturally pose and they know the angles they look better. Don’t hesitate to pose in front of me.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”3756″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_single_image image=”3766″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”]

Let's have a fun!

[vc_column_text]Parents can bring out the best smiles of their kids. After we get warmed up, we play tag and play with bubbles! I encourage parents to play with kids at that time. Smiles are just like a chain reaction! If you smile, it catches on and soon smiles are everywhere. Kids love seeing their parents being happy and smiling. Let’s have fun, just like you came over to the park to play! - Let's use props

[vc_column_text]Kids’ attention would not last so long. I usually bring a few props depending on your children ages. Balloons are always on my list of things to bring for a family photography session in Portland. We can discuss about props when you come to our pre-consultation. Pre-consultation is what we offer before you book with us. It is a great opportunity for you to know about our session and service. So, I would like to know about your children and what props will keep more attention from them!

We will use the props towards to the end of the session, so their excitement will last a little longer 🙂 No worries about the candies! I brought them for the excitement but we didn’t let them finish. - Just relax and bring your smile

[vc_column_text]As you can see the clothing color of this family, they coordinated with Navy! Outfit coordination is what I ask our clients to think about. I know that it takes a lot of effort for moms to think out the outfits for everyone in the family. If you need some help, please send me some pictures of them. You may want to start with picking your color and add some neutral colors, like white, grey, beige etc. The clothing doesn’t have to be all new, so no pressure! Also, if your time runs out for preparation, do not hesitate to let me know. If my schedule allows, we can meet you 30 mins or an hour later to give you more time. Sometimes, mom focuses so much on the other members’ outfits and preparations, she cannot take her own time. Mom has to be happy to make your family happy! We can adjust the starting time. Just relax and let’s be excited to create your family history! It is not an opportunity that everyone can have. Maternity Photography and Family Portraits by Kimi Photography

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]We often have newly moms and dads for their 1st baby’s newborn photography, but we also have parents who already have their 1st kid and they are expecting their 2nd baby! I appreciate their effort to have pictures as their family treasure, since I know it is hard to move around right after the birth. When I am chosen to be their photographer, I am so honored and it makes my heart bubble and I’m happy that they will have something to pass on to the next generation.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”3620″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]When I met the mom during the pre-consultation, she was so very excited to have her second baby. She booked with us 6 months ahead of her due date. We didn’t even know the baby’s gender! She wanted me to capture the belly for the maternity session when she was around 8 months, but also she doesn’t want to miss capturing the moments of just the 3 of them. Since she said she could not have time to have family pictures before and missed a newborn session for her 1st boy, I suggested they have maternity photography with family portraits, which focuses on the 1st child and the 3 of them, combined together. Since this family decided to have maternity and newborn session together, there is no extra charge for combining the maternity photography and family portrait session, but we did ask them to allow us to have 2 hours so we could capture additional scenes for their family portrait.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”3629″ img_size=”large” add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center”][vc_single_image image=”3621″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_single_image image=”3638″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]With this 3 year old boy, We had so much fun! Family Portrait Session in Portland with Kimi Photography

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]I am always so thankful when my clients come back. I love seeing the family and babies growing up! Their maternity pictures were taken by Kimi Photography about 4 years ago.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”3359″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_single_image image=”3358″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]I still remember that the time we had the maternity session was pretty cold, but full of giggles and happiness! I cannot believe that this boy was the little bump! He is now 4 years old and they are back for a Family Portrait Session with Kimi Photography!

Usually we reserve about 2 hours for our Family Portrait Session. It depends on the kid’s age though. Little ones are a little more difficult to keep their attention on the photo session. As we know they don’t last 2 hours. We will have some activities and stuff to entertain them ( like balloons, other toys, and sometimes a cake ) to capture the moment, and we capture the interactions between the family. With this 4 year old boy, the session went very smooth with lots of laughs and smiles.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”3363″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_single_image image=”3364″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]In these 4 years, they got another bump! We also celebrated this little man’s first birthday together![/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”3365″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_single_image image=”3366″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]From our experience, especially 1 to 3 years old kids, sometimes have a hard time being in the mood of a photo session for 2 hours. We usually take pictures with them (if there are little ones in the family) at the beginning, then move on to other pictures.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]We also try to take some posed pictures! I personally think it is important to have mix of candid and posed pictures, especially for family portrait sessions. We always want to remember the real smiles and laughter of your family, but it is also nice to have a few posed pictures as a nice memory. Portland Photographer Kimi Photography: Spring Family and Maternity photography

It has been 2 years already, but it was so great to meet them while I was visiting in Japan. They live in Tanzania and this girl was born there. I met them before I moved to the US, so I haven’t seen this cute girl in person! This family’s happiness just made me filled with joy.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”2958″ img_size=”full” image_position=”normal-align-left” has_link=”false” link_type=”normal”][vc_single_image image=”2957″ img_size=”full” image_position=”normal-align-left” has_link=”false” link_type=”normal”][vc_single_image image=”2956″ img_size=”full” image_position=”normal-align-left” has_link=”false” link_type=”normal”][vc_single_image image=”2955″ img_size=”full” image_position=”normal-align-left” has_link=”false” link_type=”normal”][vc_column_text]The reason they wanted to have the session with me was for family and maternity photography. Since it was full blooming time for cherry blossoms and grape blossoms, we decided to meet at the park, which was pretty close from my parents’ home. I even play there when I was little! Her dad picked up something and was showing it to her. They were expecting a boy at the time when I took their photo. I have seen the boy on the facebook, but not in person. I wish the time will come soon to meet him too.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”2954″ img_size=”full” image_position=”normal-align-left” has_link=”false” link_type=”normal”][vc_column_text]This shot was a request. They didn’t get a ring picture from their wedding, so I captured that. She must be more grown up and a good older sister for her little brother by now. Fall Family Portrait Session in Vancouver Washington!

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]Fall is one of the more popular seasons for portrait sessions. It is so beautiful with all the colored leaves around Portland area. However, the beauty comes with rain in Oregon…

For our October photo sessions, we don’t take as many reservations as we take for other months because of the weather. It is so important for us to capture each clients memories, so we make sure all of our clients can get nice weather for their photo session.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]This family came with their 3 year old girl for family portraits and the girl’s 3 years old celebration portrait. They planed to go to Tsubaki Grand Shrine in Seattle a week after this photo session.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”2202″ img_size=”full” image_position=”normal-align-left” has_link=”false” link_type=”normal”][vc_column_text]In Japan, they have a Shichi-go-san festival. This traditional festival is for three and five year-old boys and three and seven year-old girls to celebrate their healthy growth. Children dress up in Japanese traditional wear “kimono.”[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”2201″ img_size=”full” image_position=”normal-align-left” has_link=”false” link_type=”normal”][vc_single_image image=”2189″ img_size=”full” image_position=”normal-align-left” has_link=”false” link_type=”normal”][vc_single_image image=”2200″ img_size=”full” image_position=”normal-align-left” has_link=”false” link_type=”normal”][vc_column_text]We started taking photos at their home. She started the session in a good mood at Vancouver Lake Regional Park, but the sandals were too hard to walk in…and it made her grumpy…[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”2192″ img_size=”full” image_position=”normal-align-left” has_link=”false” link_type=”normal”][vc_column_text]I am sure her parents were getting a bit nervous wondering how it would turn out. I usually bring some toys to play with kids when I have a session involving age 3-8 years old. Beautiful Family Photo Session in Hillsboro Oregon

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]I could have a chance to photograph this beautiful Japanese family in this summer. Their baby girl visited my studio when she was about 2 weeks old. About 5 months after her newborn baby photo session, they booked their family photo session. I was so happy to meet the family again!

As we always do, we met Hisako (the wife) for consultation. This is the meeting before the every photo session. We can get to know each other, and I will be able to know what my clients are looking for with me. We decided to go with the picnic theme, so everyone can be relaxed and have a fun during the photo session.

Another thing I usually ask is coordinate what they are going to wear. I always try to help with emailing back and forth, and Hisako said they all have navy or blue clothing, so they decided to coordinate with blue![/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”2041″ img_size=”full” image_position=”normal-align-left” has_link=”false” link_type=”normal”][vc_single_image image=”2050″ img_size=”full” image_position=”normal-align-left” has_link=”false” link_type=”normal”][vc_column_text]I think the picnic theme actually worked well for their 4-year-old boy. It is about the age…running, climbing, and chasing anything they see! It is almost impossible to let 4-year-old boy to sit for 5 seconds![/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”2052″ img_size=”full” image_position=”normal-align-left” has_link=”false” link_type=”normal”][vc_column_text]Hisako’s parents come from Japan in this summer. It was another reason for them to have a family photography session. They just celebrated their 50th anniversary. They were shy to get close first, but I truly think it precious to see parents in love like them. Also, their love to the grand kids just made my heart melt. Since the weather was awesome, I took a preview of Laurelhurst Park on the South East side of Portland. A Family photo session is coming soon!

We are thinking to do a picnic style photo shoot, so the park seems to work out great![/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”1179″ img_size=”large” image_position=”normal-align-left” has_link=”false” link_type=”normal”][vc_column_text]It was Wednesday, but many people were outside on the ground and getting some tanning in! When I go to parks in Japan on sunny days, I see quite a few salesmen, who wore long sleeves and would be sweating, resting on the bench. Here, when I am in America, I see many girls with swim suits at Laurelhurst Park. Very interesting contrast :D[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”1180″ img_size=”uxb-port-single-portrait” image_position=”normal-align-left” has_link=”false” link_type=”normal”][vc_column_text]I saw a few painters too![/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”1181″ img_size=”uxb-port-single-portrait” image_position=”normal-align-left” has_link=”false” link_type=”normal”][vc_column_text]It was about 87F on this day. I met some dog walker wearing dresses. They dress up with a different color polka dots 🙂

Family Photo in Portland Oregon

She is the mom of three boys![/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”874″ img_size=”full” image_position=”normal-align-left” has_link=”false” link_type=”normal”][vc_column_text]My studio is located in downtown Portland, Oregon, but I try to take advantage of good weather and cool locations.

For this Family Photo Session, we decide to go to the park nearby where they live, so they can easily bring stuff for their 3 kids to have a fun during the session. However if they let me, I usually take some wife & husband pictures too.
