How is your 2021 so far? In early 2021, since we are having some sort of baby boom in Portland OR, we have been busy photographing maternity pictures and newborn photos. We have been serving the area for over 6 years as Kimi Photography and have had the honor of winning awards as a Portland maternity photographer.

In our maternity session, we always includes family photos! With this beautiful family, we decided to go to the Oregon coast to capture their maternity photography with some amazing scenic family portraits.

We are always sure to care about the mom’s health condition. Depending on your pregnancy, some moms are good to move until the latter part of their pregnancy, but many moms also feel really heavy moving around. Please don’t wait until the last moments to book your Portland maternity photographer. That is one of the key things for a successful maternity session! I captured their maternity session 2 months before their due date.

About 3 years ago, I captured this girl’s newborn photo. I don’t even know how to express it, but she is SO cute, humorous, and so sweet just like her mom. I love seeing her grow up with her daddy’s unchanging love!

Fun Fall Family Photo Session in Portland

How was your summer 2020? Seems like an Autumn breeze is starting these days in Portland, isn’t it? I am sure we still have a few more summer days until the rainy season comes, and I would like to remind you that holiday season would come shortly. Here are some ideas for a fun fall family session in Portland.

Book your family session early enough!

Fall family session is always fun for me to capture. Especially, if we can hit a day with no rain with colorful leaves, it is so gorgeous in Portland. I have been having my photography business a long time and there are only a few perfect days in fall every year in Portland. If you are hoping to have a session on a weekend, there are even less perfect days. Someone might say there are a lot of beautiful days in fall in Portland. Fall weather in Portland is always so unpredictable. It changes so quickly! Trust me, I deal with weather every year for fall photo sessions 🙂 We prefer not to have muddy ground and wet leaves, right? Even if the session day is sunny and dry, if a day before the session was rain, it may affect to your session. Book your fall photo session sooner than later. Usually, we as professional photographers take only a certain amount of clients per month. This way you can plan and be flexible if you can book early enough. It is one of the tips to have a fun fall family session without being anxious about the weather and the timing of fall’s colorful season!

Considering the starting time for your session

It is important to choose the best time for your kids. Some photographers love taking pictures only 2 hours before the sunset. It is because that is the best time for photographers to capture with natural soft light. If the timing works out, that is great! The problem is kids cannot adjust their timing for a photo session. Do you think this little boy will smile at me right before he takes a nap? NO! So I usually ask parents to book a session right after nap or anytime their kids are in a good mood. Lighting is what photographer should be able to handle in any situation. Bringing the smile and good vibe is very important for fall family photo session.

Choose a photographer who follows the regulations

Because of the pandemic this year, Kimi Photography is following the guidance of OHA to open our business. It is also a good idea to have 6 feet distance while you are having a fun fall family session. Before booking a photographer for your fall session, you may want to ask if the photographer has a 70-200mm lens. The lens has a long focal length, and the photographer can keep some distance from you while capturing the action. Also, it can take a beautiful portrait too. Depending on the lens the photographer has, it can assist in the safety for your photo session this year. It is something you might want to consider for your fun fall family photo session in Portland.

Coordinating your outfit!

Sometimes moms get frustrated with coordinating a perfect outfit. We recommend to start coordinating with neutral colors first then add some accent colors unless your session has a particular theme. I would love to help with coordinating outfits, so let’s have a fun coordinating instead of being stressed out!

Bring your joy and be playful!

It seems like the easiest thing, but it can also be the hardest thing sometimes. I often ask parents to not to get nervous or frustrated about photo session especially on the session day. The stress you feel, kids can also feel very much. We will try to help organize the photo session, so please come to the location just like you would go to a picnic on the day! Also, be prepared to be playful with your kids. Some parents just send their kids to be in front of the camera, but they love you to be in the pictures as well. Kids can smile much easier if you play with them like usual! Also, kids can make parents smile too. It goes both ways!

Professional Family Photography Near Portland

How is your summer 2020? I hope everyone is somehow finding a way to enjoy this summer. If you are looking for professional family photography near Portland this summer, we are open for business while following the regulation of the Oregon Health Authority and take extra care in sanitation. Even in this tough time for everyone all over the world, newborn babies are still being born in this world and children are growing up. It makes us so joyful and lets us see the hope in the future.

We visited a peony farm near Portland. Some photographers like to only take pictures at sunrise or sunset. Those times are often the best for lighting for photographers. However, it is sometimes tough to adjust for the kids timing for family pictures. Like this family, the little boy was still taking a nap and most kids tend to have more energy and be in a good mood in the morning or right after their nap time. We adjust the timing for kids and choose a location for family photography. We decided to have a session in the morning, and the peony farm was almost private.

We also often use 70-200mm which is great in helping keep the social distance between photographer and subjects.

After Baby Meal Ideas for Kimi Photography Newborn Clients

Sadly, there is no such a custom in Japan, where I grew up, anymore. My friends, whom are also an international couple, just had their newborn baby and we are enrolled in their meal train. That experience made me think to write after baby meal ideas for Kimi Photography Newborn Clients. My clients are not only from the Portland area, but also from other countries or living in Portland temporarily. Which also means being away from their friends and the baby’s grandparents who might be able to help them if they lived closer. I think knowing what mom might need for after giving birth might help recover their body and be even more enjoyable to be with the new addition of the family![/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”4180″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]When I photograph portraits, some moms care about their weight. How much and when to eat ?

[vc_column_text]According to Web MD, new moms need to have 1,800 and 2,200 calories everyday. If they are nursing, they need up to 500 calories more. What kind of Nutrients are needed?

[vc_column_text]Proteins: beans, lean meats, eggs, and soys are good to have for recovery.

Calcium: It is good to have 1,000 milligrams (take it from low-fat products) daily.

Also, Iron is necessary to let your body create new blood cells. Red meat and liver has more iron.

If you had twins, have a health condition, or are vegetarian, ask your doctor about your nutrition. Every pregnancy and delivery is different!

This is one of them. The girl found the best place to play with her dolls she brought for the session! It was already occupied when I finished wrapping the baby. The company asked me to be their featured photographer on their blog! They asked me to share a story of having my business Kimi Photography in the US. As one of many foreigners in the US, I really appreciate the opportunity to be their featured photographer to share my story![/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”3866″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]I asked one of my clients to use their pictures for the blog posting. They have been using Kimi Photography since the little girl was still in the belly! Getting to know them for their maternity pictures then they keep using us as their family photographer. How awesome is that!![/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]As you read in the blog, the joy and love of photography came first in my life. Kimi Photography also cares how we can remain and become the story teller to the next generations as a professional photographer.

In this generation, anyone can be a “photographer” if you hold camera or phone. There are many aspects to being a professional photographer however. I believe that knowing and applying photography skill to provide better services to capture and create the treasures for future generations is one of the responsibilities to call ourselves as a professional newborn and family photographer 🙂

Tips for a fun outside family photography session in Portland!

Taking care of chores fills up your schedule, and taking pictures with your phone of your kids helps distract from the feelings of missing those precious moments in your life…

Life goes so fast.

When you are raising your kids, you may hope that they grow up as fast as possible. However when you look back after they grow up, most people think they grew up too fast. To make the family photography session successful, I have some tips to make things smooth. There are also some preparations that we usually ask our clients to take. I will write about those and I hope they give you some ideas of having your family session with us.[/vc_column_text]

-Posing First

[vc_column_text]Unless they are used to being in front of a camera, people don’t know what to do. I am not a person who loves to have my portrait taken, so I know how you feel if you don’t know what to do when someone holds a camera and aims at you!

I believe that posing sometimes helps to warm up the session in the beginning. You don’t have to freeze, and I lightly pose most of the time. You can move if you want to. However, it depends on the client. Some people can naturally pose and they know the angles they look better. Don’t hesitate to pose in front of me.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”3756″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_single_image image=”3766″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”]

Let's have a fun!

[vc_column_text]Parents can bring out the best smiles of their kids. After we get warmed up, we play tag and play with bubbles! I encourage parents to play with kids at that time. Smiles are just like a chain reaction! If you smile, it catches on and soon smiles are everywhere. Kids love seeing their parents being happy and smiling. Let’s have fun, just like you came over to the park to play! - Let's use props

[vc_column_text]Kids’ attention would not last so long. I usually bring a few props depending on your children ages. Balloons are always on my list of things to bring for a family photography session in Portland. We can discuss about props when you come to our pre-consultation. Pre-consultation is what we offer before you book with us. It is a great opportunity for you to know about our session and service. So, I would like to know about your children and what props will keep more attention from them!

We will use the props towards to the end of the session, so their excitement will last a little longer 🙂 No worries about the candies! I brought them for the excitement but we didn’t let them finish. - Just relax and bring your smile

[vc_column_text]As you can see the clothing color of this family, they coordinated with Navy! Outfit coordination is what I ask our clients to think about. I know that it takes a lot of effort for moms to think out the outfits for everyone in the family. If you need some help, please send me some pictures of them. You may want to start with picking your color and add some neutral colors, like white, grey, beige etc. The clothing doesn’t have to be all new, so no pressure! Also, if your time runs out for preparation, do not hesitate to let me know. If my schedule allows, we can meet you 30 mins or an hour later to give you more time. Sometimes, mom focuses so much on the other members’ outfits and preparations, she cannot take her own time. Mom has to be happy to make your family happy! We can adjust the starting time. Just relax and let’s be excited to create your family history! It is not an opportunity that everyone can have. Maternity Photography and Family Portraits by Kimi Photography

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]We often have newly moms and dads for their 1st baby’s newborn photography, but we also have parents who already have their 1st kid and they are expecting their 2nd baby! I appreciate their effort to have pictures as their family treasure, since I know it is hard to move around right after the birth. When I am chosen to be their photographer, I am so honored and it makes my heart bubble and I’m happy that they will have something to pass on to the next generation.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”3620″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]When I met the mom during the pre-consultation, she was so very excited to have her second baby. She booked with us 6 months ahead of her due date. We didn’t even know the baby’s gender! She wanted me to capture the belly for the maternity session when she was around 8 months, but also she doesn’t want to miss capturing the moments of just the 3 of them. Since she said she could not have time to have family pictures before and missed a newborn session for her 1st boy, I suggested they have maternity photography with family portraits, which focuses on the 1st child and the 3 of them, combined together. Since this family decided to have maternity and newborn session together, there is no extra charge for combining the maternity photography and family portrait session, but we did ask them to allow us to have 2 hours so we could capture additional scenes for their family portrait.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”3629″ img_size=”large” add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center”][vc_single_image image=”3621″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_single_image image=”3638″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]With this 3 year old boy, We had so much fun! Playing with children

Newborn baby photography that babies sleep like heavenly are taken less than when they are 2 weeks old. Babies are still figuring out the day and night when they are less than 2 weeks old, so it is the best time for babies to have their first portrait done! However, it means parents must have a hard time to relax and sleep than figuring out their new life with taking care of the baby. In the situation, it could be hard to smile. During the session, I will take care of the baby most of the time after you arrive at our studio.

You don’t want to hang your baby’s image that her or his face blue or red… You may think that editing is to make thing fix or correct if something is not right. As a newborn baby photographer, we use them to emphasize the pieces that you would like to remember. Do you remember the soft skin that you touched for the first time? The moisturized pink lips, long eye lashes, funny face that your baby makes…There are so many things that your baby has which changes your life that you really cherish and don’t want to forget. Family Portrait Session in Portland with Kimi Photography

I cannot believe that this boy was the little bump! He is now 4 years old and they are back for a Family Portrait Session with Kimi Photography!

Usually we reserve about 2 hours for our Family Portrait Session. It depends on the kid’s age though. Little ones are a little more difficult to keep their attention on the photo session. As we know they don’t last 2 hours. We will have some activities and stuff to entertain them ( like balloons, other toys, and sometimes a cake ) to capture the moment, and we capture the interactions between the family. With this 4 year old boy, the session went very smooth with lots of laughs and smiles.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”3363″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_single_image image=”3364″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]In these 4 years, they got another bump! We also celebrated this little man’s first birthday together![/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”3365″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_single_image image=”3366″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]From our experience, especially 1 to 3 years old kids, sometimes have a hard time being in the mood of a photo session for 2 hours. We usually take pictures with them (if there are little ones in the family) at the beginning, then move on to other pictures.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]We also try to take some posed pictures! I personally think it is important to have mix of candid and posed pictures, especially for family portrait sessions. We always want to remember the real smiles and laughter of your family, but it is also nice to have a few posed pictures as a nice memory.
