Well, you might wonder what that means? Or maybe you’re thinking Newborn photos can be taken by anybody and just getting data would be enough for pictures? You would technically have photos somewhere right? We’ll try to answer some of these common questions here.
Two kinds of Photographers
We have been in the industry for more than 15 years. Michael has also been in the professional printing industry for more than 25 years. After everything has been switched to digital camera, we learned there are 2 kinds of photographers out there. One is called shoot & burn (or upload now that CD’s aren’t useful anymore). They shoot pictures, maybe put a color filter on and upload to a private gallery to deliver those pictures. DONE! They don’t deal with creating prints nor art. In other words, they don’t know or care what it takes to print quality artwork.
Another kind of photographers create prints and fine art products with photographs and deliver those art products as their final presentation. They of course deal with digital data, but they will be finishing their work with the final printing/art in mind as artists. It takes time, creativity, skill, work, and is more of an investment. Interestingly it also sounds more analogue in this era. Why do they print instead of saving files? Digital files only last for so long depending on the device they are saved on. This is a common knowledge in our industry as professional photographers, but is not so known or thought about by other people.
Digital files vs. Prints
Digital data are very easily misplaced, forgotten, corrupted or inaccessible. Can you easily open data in floppies, VHS, CDs MDs, or blue-ray?
Some Apple devices do not have USB stick outlets anymore. Save on the cloud you say? How can we sort through and hand down cloud data of millions of pictures? Do you even remember what images are there? We don’t have time for that and same with your future family.
Printing may sound old & analogue to some people. However, when you have tangible art and imagery on the walls, on the mantle or easily accessible albums in the bookshelf. The memories you so wanted to cherish are there and can refresh your mind of those special moments. That just doesn’t happen with digital data. So maybe you can understand why we operate the way we do and would like us to create the lasting family treasure for you and the next generations in your family.
