It has been a while again after I wrote a blog. I have many images and stories to share. We had a chance to capture their maternity and newborn session in 2023. We visited the Rose garden for their maternity session. I want to share their Rose garden maternity photo session in Portland Oregon.

 

We visited the garden in August. The best season for roses in Portland is late May to end of July, I would say. Some summers get really hot even in Portland, so it depends on the year though. There were more than enough roses and different kinds of flowers in the garden.  

I have been photographing in Portland as a professional for the last 9 years. I have taken a few sessions and visited this garden more often when I started my business, but I explored more places and did not have so many chances to photograph at the Rose garden as often these days.  After I photographed their session, I realized how much I like this garden. It only takes 5 mins to get to the garden from where we are located. I think I know what the saying “It is hard to see what is under your nose” means. Haha!

It was a warm day and we met this joyful couple at the park for their session. Almost all the time, we start our outdoor maternity session early in the evening. Lighting will be more picture friendly then.   

They were expecting a little girl. The rose colors just brighten up the photos as they were excited for their girl! What I liked about the garden was that there was so much shade in the garden in the afternoon, but not completely covered all over. Especially, if you like to wear white dress or shirts for your outside maternity session like she did, it is very important to find a location with shade.

If you have visited this garden before, you might know there are a few sections in the garden. I do not take my client everywhere in the garden. However, the capability of walking around really helps during the session to capture different moments and angles. We usually plan maternity sessions 2 months before the due date. How we plan your Portland Studio Maternity Photo Session

So since I mentioned the benefit of having your maternity session on another blog post ( kimiphotography.com/portland-maternity-photo-studio ), I also would like to write how we can plan your maternity portrait session.

1: Contact and make an appointment for a consultation

Easy enough, right?  First, please contact us. Even if you are not certain if you would like to work with us yet, we like to have a consultation before booking, so you don’t have to hesitate to contact us. We have met many Portland local and international couples who are expecting their baby, and I am sure no matter where you are from you would like to know who is going to photograph one of the most precious moments of life. After 2020, we have our consultations via online. That is how we start building our relationships with our clients. If you prefer coming to our studio, you are welcome to, so let me know.

2: When to schedule your Portland studio maternity photo session?

Unless you have health concerns, we usually schedule your session around 28-34 weeks of pregnancy. Some people want to wait until the last moment, but it gets harder to pose and walk around in the last month. The session will be a 1.5 to 2 hours photo session. After your consultation, I will send you an agreement, so you can sign up and send the form to let me know you would like to schedule and book your session.

3: Choose your color and dress

During the consultation for your Portland studio maternity photo session, we will go over your color and mood. If you don’t have any ideas we can suggest some to you or we can talk about it via emails after the consultation. We have several portrait backgrounds, furniture, and props to go with, so depending on your color and mood, I will coordinate the session. Also we have some maternity dresses, so I will send you our on-line catalogue and you can let me know which one you would like to try on. We try to have all sizes, but everyone has a different body figure and some people bring their own dress or gown for their session. Either way, we try to visualize your session by talking about your color and dresses.  

4: Choice of self makeup or professional makeup

Yes, we do have offer our hair and make up artist to work with you on your Portland studio maternity photo session! We use lights to photograph and our makeup artists knows how to work with studio lights. If you are interested in making your session even more special, I would recommend to get your make up done with a professional makeup artist. How often do you have professional makeup? It boosts your confidence in front of the camera too.

On the other hand, if you do not have time for professional makeup (like you have an older kid and it’s hard to take 2 hours for yourself), we totally understand! No worries. You can wear makeup and do your hair by yourself.  If you can bring your lipstick to retouch that would be helpful. Oh! I cannot forget about nails. A part often forgotten is nails! Please do not forget to remove your manicure if they are chipped. Or please color & freshen up your nails.

5: Just relax and hydrate during the session

When you come to our studio, I always ask our clients to bring joy. You don’t have to be nervous. Although, I totally understand your feeling, since I get shy when I have to be in front of a camera. Pictures show all your emotions, so being shy is not so helpful though. I will direct you for posing and create a fun session and hopefully you don’t have to be nervous the whole time. We also take some breaks to change the settings, so bring your snacks and water to hydrate during the session.  

Pregnancy is such a precious moment of life. As I hear, the 9 months goes so quickly. Let’s plan your Portland studio maternity photo session and capture the moment and feeling to last forever!

Portland Maternity Photography Studio for Indoor session

Winter in Portland is not so much for outdoor photography sessions, since it rains quite a bit. If you are waiting for your spring baby, please don’t give up in wishing to capture your family history! Kimi Photography has a Portland maternity photography studio in North West Portland, near St, Vincent Hospital.

When I photograph these types of images, my husband Michael (who assists me for some sessions) will not be with us.  If you would like it to be, studio maternity sessions could be more private than an outside maternity session.

These photos are just an example of what we can do at our studio.

Also, you are welcome to wear non see through dresses, if you would like. We have a variety of dresses in our studio!  We talk about mood, type of images and those things at our consultation which we always have before booking. This way, we know what you are looking for with our Portland maternity photography studio, and we can discuss about the details and provide what you would like.

As we are a multicultural maternity and newborn studio, we respect all cultures and make sure our clients would be comfortable to be photographed during their precious moments!

They came over to our studio 2.5 months before her due date. It depends on your bump, but I recommend my clients to come over for their maternity session about 2 months before their due. Since it will be harder to move around as it gets closer to the due date, that is the best timing for maternity sessions!

We are always sure to care about the mom’s health condition. Depending on your pregnancy, some moms are good to move until the latter part of their pregnancy, but many moms also feel really heavy moving around. Please don’t wait until the last moments to book your Portland maternity photographer. That is one of the key things for a successful maternity session! I captured their maternity session 2 months before their due date.

About 3 years ago, I captured this girl’s newborn photo. I don’t even know how to express it, but she is SO cute, humorous, and so sweet just like her mom. I love seeing her grow up with her daddy’s unchanging love!

It was such exciting news hearing about my younger sister when I was 4 years old. However, I was not clearly understanding what would change and not change. That made me a little nervous.

Even if you try to give the most attention to your older child, the newborn baby will take up your time. It is not easy for someone who was used to being the center of the family and now they have to share the spotlight with the new member. To understand the situation and role change for having a new sibling, older siblings need some preparation and encouragement. Family transformation needs a lot of love and trust, right? 🙂

While I take pictures at a newborn photo session, I see how your older kids are reacting to the newborn and I try to give them complimenting words as being a good big brother and sister.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”3709″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_single_image image=”3712″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]We have variety of age groups that come for their newborn photo session from all over the place! I often meet 2-4 year olds as older siblings at my newborn photo sessions. At preschooler age, they are still very attached to their mom. Also, it is hard for them to understand sharing too. Like it says, it would be a good opportunity for them to spend quality time with dad. Most of the time, I finish up all sibling and dad photos with their newborn first. So they can play or spend time together while I capture mom and the new sibling. This way, the older sibling doesn’t have to wait for their little brother and sister for too long, and mom doesn’t have to be overwhelmed at our newborn photo session.

I always like to capture those moments. The key to capture those moment with a newborn is communicating enough to the older sibling first. Encouraging them to be sweet to the newborn and earning the trust from them by not controlling their feelings.  I will only be with them a short time during the photo session, but most importantly showing love to the older one during the session makes the newborn photo session more memorable for them!  By seeing the pictures I capture, I hope they understand and adjust to the change and are proud of themselves being a big sibling!

For an outside session, we can enjoy the weather and capture the season with the maternity portrait session. Usually kids love being outside and running around if you have one or more children already! It is great for the family oriented sessions. For the inside session, we can make the maternity portrait session more intimate. Also, you don’t have to walk around, so it is easy for the mom. Another thing is….Weather. Usually we reserve about 2 hours for our Family Portrait Session. It depends on the kid’s age though. Little ones are a little more difficult to keep their attention on the photo session. As we know they don’t last 2 hours.  We will have some activities and stuff to entertain them ( like balloons, other toys, and sometimes a cake ) to capture the moment, and we capture the interactions between the family. With this 4 year old boy, the session went very smooth with lots of laughs and smiles.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”3363″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_single_image image=”3364″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]In these 4 years, they got another bump! We also celebrated this little man’s first birthday together![/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”3365″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_single_image image=”3366″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]From our experience, especially 1 to 3 years old kids, sometimes have a hard time being in the mood of a photo session for 2 hours. We usually take pictures with them (if there are little ones in the family) at the beginning, then move on to other pictures.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]We also try to take some posed pictures! I personally think it is important to have mix of candid and posed pictures, especially for family portrait sessions.
