How is your 2021 so far? In early 2021, since we are having some sort of baby boom in Portland OR, we have been busy photographing maternity pictures and newborn photos. We have been serving the area for over 6 years as Kimi Photography and have had the honor of winning awards as a Portland maternity photographer.

In our maternity session, we always includes family photos! With this beautiful family, we decided to go to the Oregon coast to capture their maternity photography with some amazing scenic family portraits.

We are always sure to care about the mom’s health condition. Depending on your pregnancy, some moms are good to move until the latter part of their pregnancy, but many moms also feel really heavy moving around. Please don’t wait until the last moments to book your Portland maternity photographer. That is one of the key things for a successful maternity session! I captured their maternity session 2 months before their due date.

About 3 years ago, I captured this girl’s newborn photo. I don’t even know how to express it, but she is SO cute, humorous, and so sweet just like her mom. I love seeing her grow up with her daddy’s unchanging love!

Tips for Portland Maternity Photography Session

Compared to other types of photography sessions, I think maternity is one of the new sessions people recently think to capture and make memories by photography. The maternity time is incredibly beautiful and you will experience it only a few times in your life if you are lucky! Some may not experience it at all or only once. Some may experience way more than they thought 🙂 Here are some tips for your Portland maternity photography session![/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

1 Find a photographer who is available for both inside and outside sessions!

In Portland, Almost half of the year it rains…If you are expecting to give a birth in winter time, you might want to check the availability for an inside session. If you would like to, you can reserve an outside session for beautiful weather, but I recommend to have an inside shoot option in case of a rainy day. Usually, maternity photography is taken during the 3rd trimester when all the organs will be pushed by baby and you may want to go to the bathroom more frequently than before. Especially in the cold weather, you don’t want to hold it and take a risk of having pyelitis or cystitis. Also, maternity photography session can be a time concern; it has to be taken before the baby is born! You don’t want to wait for weather too long to miss the moment. At Kimi Photography, we offer both inside and outside maternity photography sessions. We also have some maternity dresses for you to wear if you would like. For our in-studio sessions, we ask your preference of a sexy moody type of maternity photography session or light and laughter type. 2 Be comfortable with your photographer!

Being comfortable is a key to choose your photographer in any photography session. I believe for maternity session, you might want to choose someone who is also knowledgeable about pregnancy and newborns. It always helps to understand what you are going thorough and what care is needed during the photo session. Also, if you are interested in a newborn session, you can use the same photographer as the maternity session. It is just a photo session you may think, but I believe that photographer is a person who helps to create your family memory which becomes your life history. You want to choose someone you like![/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”3803″][vc_single_image image=”3802″][vc_single_image image=”3801″][vc_single_image image=”3804″][vc_column_text]

3 Coordinate the session: color, make-up, clothing!

I personally prefer neutral colors like cream, white, grey and black for the dad to wear. The mom is beautiful, so I don’t think we need to wear too much jewelry or add too much colors. Simple colors will accentuate the beauty of maternity, although I do have some colored maternity dresses for an in-studio maternity session. Portland maternity photography session is to capture the beauty of pregnancy and the love to the baby, so dad’s neutral color choice helps to put more attention to the mom 🙂 If you have a theme or color that you like, it is always nice to match with your spouse. Also, you may want to consider hiring your make-up artist. Some of you might be really good at DIY make-up, then you don’t have to. I will retouch the images, so you don’t need to wear too much make-up. 4 Bring your personal props if you have them!

I have tons of props at my studio for maternity and newborn sessions. However, if you have any personal props which are related to your baby or pregnancy, let’s photograph with it. For example, you can bring a pair of shoes for your baby. If you have a toy or cloth that you used when you were little, you can bring them! Personal props make your Portland maternity photography session more special. Also, the personal props can be used to tie in your newborn session, to have before and after type of shots if you like! How to prepare your kid to have a new sibling?

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Are you expecting your 2nd baby? or 3rd? I am the first child of my parents. The family transformation for having a new sibling for me was not so easy. I still remember the mixed feeling of joy and complication of being an older sister. If you have younger siblings, I bet you’ve encountered the moment also!

It was such exciting news hearing about my younger sister when I was 4 years old. However, I was not clearly understanding what would change and not change. That made me a little nervous.

Even if you try to give the most attention to your older child, the newborn baby will take up your time. It is not easy for someone who was used to being the center of the family and now they have to share the spotlight with the new member. To understand the situation and role change for having a new sibling, older siblings need some preparation and encouragement. Family transformation needs a lot of love and trust, right? 🙂

While I take pictures at a newborn photo session, I see how your older kids are reacting to the newborn and I try to give them complimenting words as being a good big brother and sister.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”3709″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_single_image image=”3712″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]We have variety of age groups that come for their newborn photo session from all over the place! I often meet 2-4 year olds as older siblings at my newborn photo sessions. At preschooler age, they are still very attached to their mom. Also, it is hard for them to understand sharing too. Like it says, it would be a good opportunity for them to spend quality time with dad. Most of the time, I finish up all sibling and dad photos with their newborn first. So they can play or spend time together while I capture mom and the new sibling. This way, the older sibling doesn’t have to wait for their little brother and sister for too long, and mom doesn’t have to be overwhelmed at our newborn photo session.

I always like to capture those moments. The key to capture those moment with a newborn is communicating enough to the older sibling first. Encouraging them to be sweet to the newborn and earning the trust from them by not controlling their feelings. I will only be with them a short time during the photo session, but most importantly showing love to the older one during the session makes the newborn photo session more memorable for them! By seeing the pictures I capture, I hope they understand and adjust to the change and are proud of themselves being a big sibling!

Maternity Photography and Family Portraits by Kimi Photography

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]We often have newly moms and dads for their 1st baby’s newborn photography, but we also have parents who already have their 1st kid and they are expecting their 2nd baby! I appreciate their effort to have pictures as their family treasure, since I know it is hard to move around right after the birth. When I am chosen to be their photographer, I am so honored and it makes my heart bubble and I’m happy that they will have something to pass on to the next generation.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”3620″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]When I met the mom during the pre-consultation, she was so very excited to have her second baby. She booked with us 6 months ahead of her due date. We didn’t even know the baby’s gender! She wanted me to capture the belly for the maternity session when she was around 8 months, but also she doesn’t want to miss capturing the moments of just the 3 of them. Since she said she could not have time to have family pictures before and missed a newborn session for her 1st boy, I suggested they have maternity photography with family portraits, which focuses on the 1st child and the 3 of them, combined together. Since this family decided to have maternity and newborn session together, there is no extra charge for combining the maternity photography and family portrait session, but we did ask them to allow us to have 2 hours so we could capture additional scenes for their family portrait.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”3629″ img_size=”large” add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center”][vc_single_image image=”3621″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_single_image image=”3638″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]With this 3 year old boy, We had so much fun! Beautiful Maternity Portrait Session in Portland Oregon

I have been living in Portland for 9 years so far, but it is one of the worst winters… When they booked with Kimi Photography, we could not guarantee the sunny weather for outside session, so we planed inside studio session for the maternity portrait! I personally like both outside and inside sessions. I think both have their good points depending on the situation.

For an outside session, we can enjoy the weather and capture the season with the maternity portrait session. Usually kids love being outside and running around if you have one or more children already! It is great for the family oriented sessions. For the inside session, we can make the maternity portrait session more intimate. Also, you don’t have to walk around, so it is easy for the mom. Another thing is….Weather. Family Portrait Session in Portland with Kimi Photography

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]I am always so thankful when my clients come back. I love seeing the family and babies growing up! Their maternity pictures were taken by Kimi Photography about 4 years ago.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”3359″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_single_image image=”3358″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]I still remember that the time we had the maternity session was pretty cold, but full of giggles and happiness! I cannot believe that this boy was the little bump! He is now 4 years old and they are back for a Family Portrait Session with Kimi Photography!

Usually we reserve about 2 hours for our Family Portrait Session. It depends on the kid’s age though. Little ones are a little more difficult to keep their attention on the photo session. As we know they don’t last 2 hours. We will have some activities and stuff to entertain them ( like balloons, other toys, and sometimes a cake ) to capture the moment, and we capture the interactions between the family. With this 4 year old boy, the session went very smooth with lots of laughs and smiles.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”3363″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_single_image image=”3364″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]In these 4 years, they got another bump! We also celebrated this little man’s first birthday together![/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”3365″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_single_image image=”3366″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]From our experience, especially 1 to 3 years old kids, sometimes have a hard time being in the mood of a photo session for 2 hours. We usually take pictures with them (if there are little ones in the family) at the beginning, then move on to other pictures.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]We also try to take some posed pictures! I personally think it is important to have mix of candid and posed pictures, especially for family portrait sessions. We always want to remember the real smiles and laughter of your family, but it is also nice to have a few posed pictures as a nice memory. Portland Photographer Kimi Photography: Spring Family and Maternity photography

It has been 2 years already, but it was so great to meet them while I was visiting in Japan. They live in Tanzania and this girl was born there. I met them before I moved to the US, so I haven’t seen this cute girl in person! This family’s happiness just made me filled with joy.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”2958″ img_size=”full” image_position=”normal-align-left” has_link=”false” link_type=”normal”][vc_single_image image=”2957″ img_size=”full” image_position=”normal-align-left” has_link=”false” link_type=”normal”][vc_single_image image=”2956″ img_size=”full” image_position=”normal-align-left” has_link=”false” link_type=”normal”][vc_single_image image=”2955″ img_size=”full” image_position=”normal-align-left” has_link=”false” link_type=”normal”][vc_column_text]The reason they wanted to have the session with me was for family and maternity photography. Since it was full blooming time for cherry blossoms and grape blossoms, we decided to meet at the park, which was pretty close from my parents’ home. I even play there when I was little! Her dad picked up something and was showing it to her. They were expecting a boy at the time when I took their photo. I have seen the boy on the facebook, but not in person. They didn’t get a ring picture from their wedding, so I captured that. Needless to say, having a baby is one of the best and most transitional moments in life. However, I think not so many people think about capturing the beauty of pregnancy as much as having newborn pictures. It could be just a transition from a couple to becoming parents, but it’s an amazing and beautiful part of having a baby.

At 5 to 8 months of pregnancy, female hormones increase about ten times more than before being pregnant. I noticed that pregnant women have shiny skin and their hair has a nice glow at their maternity portrait session. Also, the excitement of the future makes the feeling more joyful and it has a great affect on their expressions!

Tips for successful maternity portrait session

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]Since many people come to my studio with newborns, the parents often decide to do their last couple photo session before childbirth; Maternity Portrait Session.

We offer both outside sessions and inside sessions for maternity pictures. For our outside session, you can prepare like you would do going on a date. Showing the love and excitement of looking forward to the new member of your family is very important for that session. For our inside studio session, I focus on the beauty and love that shines through in this wondrous event. This would be more posing and styling. Your spouse can be included in both sessions of course. If you would like to combine both an in-studio and outdoor session please let us know at the consultation.

How does the maternity portrait shoot go?

First, please contact us and make an appointment for a free consultation. At the consultation, we decide the place (outside location or studio) and theme. For inside portrait sessions, we will set up a few different sets/looks in the studio. 2 weeks after your session, we will show you the edited images (about 25-30 images) after the portrait session where you can choose what to do with your images.

What to wear?

Outside maternity photo shoot

It is depends on the theme and color. If you don’t know what to wear, choose one subtle color (White, beige, grey and brown etc…) and your accent color. You don’t have to go crazy. Simple is good. And please don’t forget to match with your spouse! We will walk around during the photo shoot, so high heels are pretty, but it might be nice to bring a pair of walking shoes. You can bring some different outfits, but sometimes it is hard to find a place to change (layers would be great). Jackets, Cardigans, and scarves are very handy.

Inside maternity photo shoot

–For the mom:

Please wear or bring beige or white underwear. We have some maternity lacy dresses and some tulle to work with creatively. The subtle color underwear works for those dresses. If you have some to choose from, that would be great! If you would like to wear particular lingerie, please bring them to the session.

–For the dad:

Casual is good, but please bring one classy shirt (like an ironed linen shirt). I would recommend to wear beige pants or jeans to make the style more relaxed! Since the baby’s mom could wear a lacy dress, printed T-shirts and the like wouldn’t necessarily compliment.

How long does it last?

Outside maternity portrait shoot
It lasts about 1.5-2 hours for our outside photo session.

Inside maternity portrait shoot

About 2 hours for an inside studio photo session.
