Are you expecting your first baby? Are you ready for your newborn session?

I am sure it will be the most wonderful and joyful experience. To have a wonderful newborn session, I would like to write about what to prepare for your first newborn session.

Let them be sleepy 

-Avoid coffee if you are coffee drinker

We are Portlanders,  I drink at least 3 cups of coffee, so it is tough for me to tell my clients who love coffee…but yes, caffeine does not help to let your baby sleep if you breastfeed them. I think refraining from caffeine a day before the session would really help your baby to sleep well during the session.

-Timing direction for feeding will be given when you book your session with us. Usually we ask you to feed them right after you arrive at our studio, but it really depends. So instead of getting nervous about it, let’s just focus on what your baby needs. Most babies will sleep when they are in their car seat, so how long it would take you from your home to our studio matters. I can give you some advice from my experience once we schedule your session!

 

-If your baby tends not to sleep at night, they will sleep during the session most of the time, so we hope you can relax while we take care your baby. Some parents bring their laptop, snacks, and books.

-Even you want pictures with their eyes open, let’s let them sleep first. Some clients see my Instagram posts with  smiling babies and babies that are awake, and ask if I can photograph a wide awake baby. It is easy to let them be awake in a new environment. Calming down however is a key to photograph happy mellow babies!

I just wrote what to prepare for your first newborn session. We have experienced that these worked with other babies, but everybody is different! Some parents care about us so much and being sorry if things do not go smooth during the session, but seriously no worries. We enjoy seeing those personalities! We know all new parents are adjusting to their new life when they come for our newborn photo session.

Digital files vs. Prints

Digital data are very easily misplaced, forgotten, corrupted or inaccessible. Can you easily open data in floppies, VHS, CDs MDs, or blue-ray?

Some Apple devices do not have USB stick outlets anymore. Save on the cloud you say? How can we sort through and hand down cloud data of millions of pictures? Do you even remember what images are there? We don’t have time for that and same with your future family.

Printing may sound old & analogue to some people. However, when you have tangible art and imagery on the walls, on the mantle or easily accessible albums in the bookshelf. The memories you so wanted to cherish are there and can refresh your mind of those special moments. That just doesn’t happen with digital data. So maybe you can understand why we operate the way we do and would like us to create the lasting family treasure for you and the next generations in your family.

The love will be felt through generations when they open the album.

Our county is on phase-1, right now on July 16th, 2020. We are open for our business and are being very careful with our personal life and following Oregon Health Authority’s guideline for our business. We are limiting the number of clients right now, because of the sanitation needs for newborn photography.

For newborn photography, sanitation is of course always necessary. Even before the pandemic happens, we have been washing our outfits, clothing (including knitted outfits), and blankets after each client. Also, props were wiped off every time we used them.

Calcium: It is good to have 1,000 milligrams (take it from low-fat products) daily.

Also, Iron is necessary to let your body create new blood cells. Red meat and liver has more iron.

If you had twins, have a health condition, or are vegetarian, ask your doctor about your nutrition. Every pregnancy and delivery is different!

Moms dealt with so much pain during the delivery. Also babies went thorough so much when they come to this world. Some babies come with rough skin and acne, some come with birth marks etc.  Usually, I clean up the rough skin and acne for the final images unless my client request to leave them. The signature editing is included in the sessions with Kimi Photography.

Baby skin also has a lot of color shades. In my studio, we have captured many babies of different race from all over the world and a lot of mixed cultured babies. This baby who has lighter skin color had some pink and blue spots on his eyes and thin area, so I even them out for the final image.

On this picture, the parents requested me to leave the red birth mark on his forehead that he was born with.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”3600″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]This is another before and after. This picture shows the baby’s face more clearly. Newborn babies are so flexible and fragile. There are some techniques that require letting them pose. Especially, when the baby has to hold their head like this pose we compose images to make the final. Why? Safety comes first at Kimi Photography. We don’t force babies to pose in uncomfortable or unsafe ways.

There are a lot of poses and ways to capture babies with safety. Photoshop techniques help in creating fine art newborn pictures and allow babies to be themselves.

1 Find a photographer who is available for both inside and outside sessions!

In Portland, Almost half of the year it rains…If you are expecting to give a birth in winter time, you might want to check the availability for an inside session. If you would like to, you can reserve an outside session for beautiful weather, but I recommend to have an inside shoot option in case of a rainy day. Usually, maternity photography is taken during the 3rd trimester when all the organs will be pushed by baby and you may want to go to the bathroom more frequently than before. Especially in the cold weather, you don’t want to hold it and take a risk of having pyelitis or cystitis. Also, maternity photography session can be a time concern; it has to be taken before the baby is born! You don’t want to wait for weather too long to miss the moment. At Kimi Photography, we offer both inside and outside maternity photography sessions. We also have some maternity dresses for you to wear if you would like. For our in-studio sessions, we ask your preference of a sexy moody type of maternity photography session or light and laughter type. 2 Be comfortable with your photographer!

Being comfortable is a key to choose your photographer in any photography session. I believe for maternity session, you might want to choose someone who is also knowledgeable about pregnancy and newborns. It always helps to understand what you are going thorough and what care is needed during the photo session. Also, if you are interested in a newborn session, you can use the same photographer as the maternity session. It is just a photo session you may think, but I believe that photographer is a person who helps to create your family memory which becomes your life history. 3 Coordinate the session: color, make-up, clothing!

I personally prefer neutral colors like cream, white, grey and black for the dad to wear. The mom is beautiful, so I don’t think we need to wear too much jewelry or add too much colors. Simple colors will accentuate the beauty of maternity, although I do have some colored maternity dresses for an in-studio maternity session. Portland maternity photography session is to capture the beauty of pregnancy and the love to the baby, so dad’s neutral color choice helps to put more attention to the mom 🙂 If you have a theme or color that you like, it is always nice to match with your spouse. Also, you may want to consider hiring your make-up artist. Some of you might be really good at DIY make-up, then you don’t have to. I will retouch the images, so you don’t need to wear too much make-up. 4 Bring your personal props if you have them!

I have tons of props at my studio for maternity and newborn sessions. However, if you have any personal props which are related to your baby or pregnancy, let’s photograph with it. For example, you can bring a pair of shoes for your baby. If you have a toy or cloth that you used when you were little, you can bring them! Personal props make your Portland maternity photography session more special. Also, the personal props can be used to tie in your newborn session, to have before and after type of shots if you like!
