Since it has been popular to have a destination wedding in Portland for Japanese couples, I have been thinking to do a styled shoot to appeal to those couples who are comfortable to be in the boho theme and looking for the Asian taste.

Susanna from Pistil and Stamen and Kimberly from Sweet Black Raspberry (www.blacksweetraspberry.com) helped me to develop the idea and make it happen in real life. We decided to create a few scenes at different locations in this styled shoot: Falls, woodland, glamping, with a bit of bohemian and Asian taste to tie all together. With words, it is a little hard to describe it… I hope the pictures will communicate better to you!

I am so thankful to work with all the vendors who are willing to be a part of this and put their time, effort and talent to this photo shoot.

If you just visited our website to check out wedding pictures and came across this blog, I am sorry…I don’t mean to scare you!! Marriage is very fun and your wedding is the day you two would be united as one. It is beautiful, but I learned that it requires constant effort to have a wonderful marriage and understand your spouse.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]2 months after our wedding, we had our first argument. Just like with most arguments between a man and a woman, I was really frustrated and I started asking Mike “Do you think I got married to clean up your dishes?” I still remember the face Mike gave me after he heard my question. His face was like…a confused panda. He gently asked me “Why are you frustrated? What can I do? I would help…”   It was too late for me to be asked those questions at the time! He even came in to my territory, the little kitchen, to help me. Well, I was already not happy with him not helping me with dishes, laundry, cooking, cleaning the bathrooms and other house chores that I was doing and piling up my frustrations for 2 MONTHS!! I felt like anything he did at that moment was too late. After I threw at him all my anxiousness, he came closer to me and try to hug and find the reasons why I got frustrated. His reaction also made me even more frustrated, like a cat harassed by something. Aw, It sounds like Mike got a horrible wife…lol.

However, how I am glad that we had the argument, because it made me and us realize how we were raised would affect our marriage life. In fact, I think not understanding the love language of each other could be one of the biggest elements that could ruin your marriage.

Mike grew up as the third child in his family out of 4 kids. For him, his love language is mostly tactile and quality time. Acts of service just wasn’t something he translated into feeling loved or in giving love to someone. It’s not that it isn’t something he is capable of, just that it seemed he was oblivious to that type of love.

I grew up as my family’s first daughter and had a younger sister. My parents own their business in Japan and I needed to help my mom all the time since I was little. I was not sure I was a good helper for her or not, but when I was told to do something, I followed.  Mom’s appreciation for the chore or spending time with me made me filled with love. That is how I felt love when I grew up and made me think I am worthy. Unlike how Mike grew up, Japanese culture doesn’t really use body touch to express love as much as Americans do. That is even applicable to the family members.

During the first 2 months of our marriage, I was trying so hard to express my love by serving him as his wife at home. Act of service is the way I can express my love to him and receive love from him. On the other hand, Mike feels and receives loves through touch and closeness.  We were and are so in love and married, I thought he would feel it in the same way. Obviously, both of us did not have ability to understand each others perspectives. When we were facing the problem, we thought that the problem was who and how to do the house chores. By digging down to the real issue, the core problem we had was understand each others way of love expression.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]After we knew what we had to fix or adapt, we started using each others love language. He started helping me more with house chores and I express love in a tactile way (not just that…) It became so much better to communicate with each other and our love tank can be filled way easier than before. I know everyone is not the same and all couple have different ways to learn and grow through marriage, but it was a great lesson for us.

Since we live the edge of Portland, Beaverton, and Hillsboro, we often go to the Orenco Area in Hillsboro. We were always curious about the McMenamins that we pass by on Cornelius Road, which had such a nice look even just from the outside. We are always looking for cool venues to give some helpful info to our clients, so we contacted them for an interview!
If you’re looking for vintage wedding venue, you might want to consider this place. We can’t say enough about how unique and rustic and fun this place is.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”1655″ img_size=”large” image_position=”normal-align-left” has_link=”false” link_type=”normal”][vc_column_text]Here is the entrance to this wonderland! It is a little hard to see how big the place really is and just how pervasive the greens and flowers are inside from Cornelius pass road. Do you like garden style weddings? I personally love nature and garden themed weddings. I wish I knew this place for our wedding when we got married 🙂 There are several places to have ceremonies and receptions at McMenamins Imbrie House.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”1660″ img_size=”large” image_position=”normal-align-center” has_link=”false” link_type=”normal”][vc_column_text]This place is called the Wedding Grove. There is a magnolia tree in the center and about up to 200 people can be in this area. The best time to have a wedding here with the blooming magnolias would be around April. This place is only used for weddings so no reception space here.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image img_size=”large” image_position=”normal-align-left” has_link=”false” link_type=”normal” image=”1667″][vc_column_text]Right through the grove there is a reception place called The Orchard. Surrounded by Apple and Pear trees, they can hold up to 300 people or so and it’s a wide open space to do whatever you like with. They will handle the table & chairs with their catering, but you get to make it your own event with whatever kind of decoration you want. Maybe a cool garden party theme barefoot! It’s right next to the grove, but you don’t necessarily have to use it for the reception if you use the Wedding Grove. They let you mix & match so to speak so you could have the wedding in the Wedding Grove, and then have your reception in the Octagonal Barn If you want to have that cool rustic environment. There’s a vegetable garden at the back of the Orchard where they actually use everything there in the restaurant. If not, that is where you can start your bridal plan! Even from my experience of organizing my wedding, I remember that I needed to decide so many things…colors, theme, flowers, venue…and PHOTOGRAPHER!

If you like and your wedding theme will be vintage, natural, rustic, chic, and organic style, this is the bridal show you want to check out!

This year, we attended the Art of Wedding bridal show in Portland 2014 as a vendor. Here is our booth :)[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”1115″ img_size=”large” image_position=”normal-align-left” has_link=”false” link_type=”normal”][vc_single_image image=”1117″ img_size=”full” image_position=”normal-align-left” has_link=”false” link_type=”normal”][vc_column_text]One reason I like the Art of wedding bridal show is that it is a very comfortable size. You actually have a chance to talk to your vendors which is very hard at the big bridal shows. For me, it is a great chance to hear what brides are looking for in photography.  Once we talked to people after they were done with another huge portland bridal show and it was very overwhelming for many couples. If I could suggest something to help, it would be to try out some of the smaller shows that you can have a good 5 to 10 minute conversation with a vendor and make a plan to get in touch with them later.  So often, couples will get home and have a bag full of take aways that all seem to blend together and you’re right where you left off.
